Octopus Salad or Hobotnica Salata in Croatian, is a rather prominent dish found along the coast of Croatia during the summer time. Mostly enjoyed as an appetiser, this recipe is right at home amongst my grandma’s treasure trove of comforting culinary delights.

INGREDIENTS

  • 5kg octopus (wild caught)
  • Slice 1 red onion
  • Finely sliced 2-3 shallot shoots
  • Capers
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Red Wine Vinegar
  • Salt and Pepper

PREPARATION

  • Wash octopus in water.

METHOD

  1. Place octopus in a pot and boil for 1 hour until tender. Ensuring the octopus is nice and tender is key!

  2. Discard the water.

  3. Let the octopus cool down.

  4. Cut the octopus into small pieces.

  5. Add onion and shallots.

  6. Add capers – quantity according to your taste.

  7. Mix well.

  8. Dress with extra virgin olive oil, and drizzle with red wine vinegar.

  9. Add salt and pepper to your liking.
