My Grandma’s Remedy for an upset Stomach
As a child, my Grandma would turn to an age-old remedy to help us if we ever had an upset stomach. It was always her first line of defense to help ease any tummy troubles. I gather this recipe was used by generations before her, particularly as one of the key ingredients, the Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), grows substantially on the Croatian coast and islands.
Ingredients
- Rice
- 1-2 Bay Leaves
- 1-2 cups Water
- 2-3 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Method
-
Soak white rice in a mixing bowl with water. Ensure water covers the rice. Leave at room temperature overnight.
-
Drain the water, and rinse the rice in clean filtered water.
-
Boil rice in 1-2 cups of water.
-
Add 1-2 Bay Leaves.
-
Add a splash of Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
-
Stir occasionally.
-
Once the rice has cooked, remove the Bay Leaves and serve.
The bay leaf has been used for centuries not only for a kick of flavour when cooking, but to help with digestion, amongst other potential benefits. Read here to find out more!
