Christmas Books for Kids – December Recommendations
Here is a list of Christmas Books for Kids, as part of the December Book Recommendations. Each children’s picture book listed below is unique in its own way, but similarly involves an underlying Christmas theme.
Christmas Books for Kids – December Recommendations
The story follows an anthropomorphic wooden stick called Stick Man and his journey to get back to the family tree with his children and Sticky Lady Love in time for Christmas. Stick Man doesn’t give up despite any obstacles, such as dogs wanting to play fetch. Children will find that Stick Man is resilient and speaks up for himself, ‘I’m not a mast for a silly old flag… I’m STICK MAN…’ With a repetitive rhyming scheme, this story is a real page turner, playing upon the classic I’ll be home for Christmas theme!
MARY’S LITTLE DONKEY – Gunhild Sehlin
The next Christmas Book for Kids on the list is Mary’s Little Donkey. This children’s picture book has been adapted from Gunhild Sehlin’s 1962 chapter book, which has been translated into various languages worldwide. The nativity story sees Mary befriend a little donkey who goes on to transport her and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Children will also find Mary to be kind, humble and gentle, befriending animals and those she meets along the way. Illustrated by Hélène Muller, the beautifully detailed illustrations really help bring the story to life.
GREEN IS FOR CHRISTMAS – Drew Daywalt
This is a great addition to the children’s book The Day the Crayons Quit, humorously bringing back the voices of the individual crayon colours. I personally think it is best read post reading The Day the Crayons Quit. In Green is for Christmas, Green Crayon claims that he is the only colour for Christmas time, as the other crayons claim that there is no Christmas without them too! Ultimately, the crayons all agree that they need to come together to truly make Christmas special.
THE STORY ORCHESTRA, THE NUTCRACKER – Illustrated by Jessica Courtney-Tickle
Children will be captivated by the magical illustrations in this retelling of the classic ballet story. They will also be able to press the note on every page to hear the orchestra playing music from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. This book makes for a beautiful, timeless Christmas present.
